I’m very pleased to announce the release into production of SMARTset v2.5.2

103 bug fixes, improvements and features with the emphasis in this release being stability and reliability.

  • Monitoring – New Modbus RTU diagnostics page
  • Administration – New Content Delivery Network(CDN) feature to improve UI performance especially when accessing a remote SMARTstation
  • Dashboards – Major update to the templating system and map widget
  • IoT – SMARTset now has the ability to act as an MQTT broker with it’s new embedded broker
  • SMARTstation Lite – Registration updates and 3G modem stability improvements

SMARTSET V2.5.0 RELEASED

  • Monitoring – new Modbus RTU register compaction gives a performance boost
  • Administration– Sites can be auto-populated from local device GPS
  • Controls – remote control is now automatic through firewalls and SMARtset federation
  • IoT – SMARTstations and 3rd-party devices can now self-register and start reporting data as soon as they are switched on
  • SMARTstation Lite – we welcome the introduction of another SMARTstation variant to the successful line of controllers

Estate-Wide Management using SMARTset as an IoT Platform

With 4energy’s SMARTset, you can manage and control all of your estate from a single interface. Originally conceived to support data centres, the powerful and versatile software has everything you need from an IoT platform, including:

  • Agnostic protocols – SMARTset connects to any type of sensor, IoT device or legacy gadget
  • Available in the cloud or as an on-premise solution
  • Scalable – you can start small and buy more licences and modules as you grow
  • Extensible architecture for expansions with OSGi plugins and a GWT style UI API
  • Open standards – RDBMS/noSQL, protocols, enterprise integration (LDAP/SAML/AD)

Here, we are going to show you how one of our customers uses SMARTset IoT platform. They access SMARTset from their HQ via the cloud, and can view all of their customers’ sites on a single display, or can drill-down into the information for specific sites or individual devices.

The UPS-monitoring challenge

Our client is a provider of power solutions and they wanted to monitor the uninterrupted power supplies (UPSs) they provide to their customers. The UPSs have network controller cards and software, but are not IoT-ready or equipped for monitoring on an estate-wide basis.

4energy were asked to provide technology that could:

  • Allow them to monitor all of their customers’ UPSs from a central HQ (via Internet)
  • Connect to UPSs via local networks
  • Display estate-wide data on a user-friendly, central IoT platform
  • Allow users to drill-down into specific data as needed
  • Raise alarms if there are problems with the UPSs
  • Generate regular reports on the status of the UPSs.

To meet this challenge, we used our SMARTset software IoT platform, and fitted SMARTstation Pi devices to the UPSs. We use the SMARTstation Pi’s to transform the ‘dumb’ UPSs into ‘smart’ IoT-ready devices.

To make the ‘dumb’ UPSs more intelligent, we connected each UPS to a SMARTstation Pi via the local network. The SMARTstation Pi’s turn the UPSs into smart devices by providing processing power, communications access, and a version of SMARTset, 4energy’s monitoring and control software. We also fitted temperature and humidity sensors.

Next, we created a SMARTset instance in the cloud and configured it to:

  • Connect to the UPSs via the SMARTstation Pi’s (over the Internet)
  • Pull data from the UPSs into corresponding items in the SMARTset database
  • Display the UPS data on user customised dashboards
  • Raise alarms if it detects alarm conditions on the UPSs. The alarms are raised in SMARTset and can also trigger an alarm email or SMS report, or be sent to an external system
  • Generate regular reports of the UPSs’ status. The reports are generated as PDFs, but can also be set to Excel, CSV etc.

Result

Thanks to 4energy technology, our client now has the capability to monitor the UPSs it provides to its customers, all from a single display (dashboard). They can choose to show information about all of their UPS customers on a single dashboard, or they can have dashboards for smaller groups or individual customers. This is a great way to benchmark different, but similar sites, so that similar setups can be compared side-by-side and/or league tables.

But it’s not restricted to estate-wide data – our customers can drill down into the data for individual UPSs too. And as SMARTset is in the cloud, they can access the data from anywhere with an Internet connection, via smartphone, tablet, or desktop.

They also have the ability to raise alarms and generate reports based on the status of the UPSs, and can provide customers with a local view of their UPS data.

 

HOLISTIC DATA – THE KEY TO MANAGING YOUR ESTATE EFFICIENTLY

Information is the key to running your estate as efficiently as possible. Huge energy savings can be made by optimising your site, and costs can be reduced by being able to identify and respond to, problem areas quickly. Quite simply, the more information you have, the better equipped you are to reduce your energy bills.

With SMARTset, all of the information you need is available in one application, from estate-wide overviews to precise details about specific equipment. The data is measured and presented in real-time, via SMARTset’s wide variety of displays. These include heat maps, room layouts, graphs, charts, and reports, all of which make it easy to monitor every part of your estate at any level.

SMARTset as a Network Operating Centre

SMARTset allows you to view information about your estate at any level, and so can be used as a Network Operating cCentre (NOC). Whether you want an overview of a group of assets (data centres, cabins, street furniture, etc.) or specific information about one particular sensor, SMARTset makes it easy to access the information you need.

At the highest level, you can view a map of the locations of your sites. Information about each site is displayed in a side-panel.

Select the site circle, and SMARTset displays the Site dashboard, which provides more information about that specific site.

From the Site dashboard, you can access System and Room dashboards.

System dashboards provide you with information about electrical circuits, cooling or chiller water systems. The layout shows a schematic of the system, and if you select a sensor on the schematic, SMARTset presents information about that sensor in a pop-up.

Room dashboards include layout views of the rooms in your estate, and show the equipment in place. With temperature sensors in place, the room layouts act as heatmaps, making it easy to identify hot spots and cold spots. Do you need to ‘drill down’ further into the data? No problem – simply select a sensor on the layout and sensor data is shown in a pop-up.

Fast Access to Holistic Data via Dashboards

Layouts are just one way of presenting environmental data in SMARTset. You can also create customisable dashboards and add information widgets. There are many widgets available to choose from, including value widgets for monitoring the measurements of specific sensors, graph widgets, pie charts, weather widgets and much more.

You can customise the widgets too, so that your dashboards present you with the precise information you need, in your preferred format. SMARTset can also generate reports, and again, these can be customised to provide you with the information you need to run your estate effectively either on-demand or delivered to you on a schedule.

  • Recipes – wizards that walk users through common process e.g. onboarding new devices etc.
  • Compound Widgets – very sophisticated widgets that allow value targeting and drill-down
  • Schedule Widget – users can now schedule any number of ‘things’ simultaneously e.g. boiler, ACU, lights
  • Frequency Response – very accurate mains frequency measurement (>0.01Hz) and sub-second reaction to National Grid standards
  • Energy Measurement – sub-meting functionality to support Demand Side Response (DSR)
