The scenario
The heat generated within a telecommunication basestation can seriously affect reliability and longevity of critical equipment. Today, many cabins are fitted with air conditioning, but this can be expensive to maintain and uses excessive power. With Vodafone, in conjunction with a Carbon Trust research grant, we’ve developed a system that removes air conditioning without the need for filter maintenance.
The solution
Our environmentally friendly solution was to install the CoolFlow™ system, where hot air was directed away from equipment to external exhausts via a system of flexible composite ducts. We also installed a maintenance-free CoolFilter™. This device brought in cooler air from outside, filtering it via a low-energy fan inlet. Dirt and debris is filtered out resulting in clean, cool air being continually drawn through the basestation without the need to clean or replace the filter.
The results
Thanks to cooling, the basestation's carbon footprint is reduced by over 90%. The equipment was also kept under 25°C for 85% of the year.
