The scenario

Critical telecommunications and routing equipment is used by the power industry to communicate between grid points. Often these routers trigger alarms if internal cabinet temperatures rise above 40°C this can happen for up to 20% of the year without the use of traditional air conditioning. With Scottish Power Energy Networks we developed an innovative cooling solution as an alternative to air conditioning.

The solution

We created and installed our dynamic CoolFocus™ cooling system for specific router equipment. By drawing up cold air directly through the equipment and out through strategically placed vents, it immediately lowered cabinet temperatures by 10°C.

The results

Routers kept below 40°C at all times, prolonging their life and there was no need for traditional vapour compression air conditioning. As a result, there was energy and carbon savings of 90% over conventional air conditioning systems.
